“As an organization, you then have to lead by example.”

In ‘s-Hertogenbosch, the Huis73 library decided to replace its open Wi-Fi network with a secure version. Not because they had to, but because it felt logical. The library has been offering courses on safe internet use for years. “As an organization, you then have to lead by example,” says ICT advisor Anne Klop with a smile.

Aligning with the social role

The idea fit perfectly with the library’s social role: a place where everyone has access to knowledge, information, and digital resources, safely and without barriers. The switch to a secure network reinforced that principle. Visitors now create an account once and then connect automatically, including at other participating locations. Ease of use was maintained, while security increased significantly. Staff quickly noticed that visitors asked fewer questions about connection or login issues.

Well-informed, smoothly implemented

The transition went smoothly because Huis73 took the time to share knowledge internally and inform the public well. Posters, flyers, and a brief explanation at the desk helped people understand the change. “As soon as people know why it’s necessary, they are immediately open to it,” Anne says.

An example for others

The result is not only a more secure network but also increased awareness among visitors. The library has since become an example for other institutions that want to offer secure Wi-Fi without sacrificing hospitality.
